According to Merrium-Webster's online dictionary a brain dump is "the act or an instance of comprehensively and uncritically expressing and recording one's thoughts and ideas (as on a particular topic)". In practice this means acquiring a recording device and recording everything that comes to mind related to why you are conducting a brain dump. I typically use pen and paper because I feel as though I can write faster than type or speak so it allows me to capture more thoughts. You could use brain dumps for a number of purposes. I list a few below.
Studying by recording everything you can remember about a topic. You can later compare your brain dump to a vocabulary list and/or chapter summary and see if you can recall most of the key vocabulary words and/or main ideas.
Jump starting the writing process.
Managing mental health. Instead of ruminating on topics once you record them you may be able to let them go easier. For example, creating a to-do list before you go to bed at night is a brain dump because you are clearing your mind of all work and anxiety for the next day to fall asleep faster.
One of the key elements of a brain dump is that it is intended to be an uncritical, nonjudgemental process. You can later decide what is good/bad, worth keeping/deleting.
The output from my brain dump is usually a piece of paper with words or phrases spread across the page with text in different directions and sections. It looks like chicken scratch (hence the above photo).
